June 8 Club Shoot: something a little different

By popular demand, we've decided to do something a little different for next month's June 8 Club Shoot. We'll be running a USAT (US Archery Team) tournament format shoot: a shortened qualification round followed by head-to-head elimination rounds, not too different from the matches you may have seen on Olympic or World Archery broadcasts.

This will be an opportunity for archers interested in national USAT tournaments to familiarize themselves with the format and experience archery match play, in a friendly, low-pressure environment.

To reduce the number of brackets, and keeping in mind that this is meant to be a fun practice event, we've simplified equipment divisions: compound, recurve, barebow, and trad (traditional, longbow, and all other single-string bows).

Due to the slightly more complex logistics, we strongly encourage anyone interested to register online for this shoot, as there will be limited spots available for walk-ons.

Please register online at: https://forms.gle/zx1NkXYPBe5JWiJK6. Registration will close on Saturday, June 7, the day before the event.

As per usual, the Club Shoot is free for current BMB members, and $10 for non-members.

USAT-style tournament format

All archers will shoot one qualifying round at a single distance. Distances and target sizes are normally determined by age and equipment division according to USA Archery rules. Because this is a fun/practice event, and to limit the number of brackets for elimination rounds, we are offering a limited set of distances and target sizes. Recurve archers may choose between 70m and 50m distances; others will shoot at 50m. 30m distances are reserved for youth and cub archers (ages under 15).

  • Recurve: 122cm 10-ring target at 70m, 50m, or 30m.
  • Barebow, other single-string bows: 122cm 10-ring target at 50m or 30m.
  • Compound: 80cm 6-ring target at 50m or 30m.

Qualifying round: 6 ends of 6 arrows; each end, archers have up to 4 minutes to shoot. Shooting will be done in two lines, with archers assigned to one of two lanes at each target ("A" and "C" shooting on the left lane, "B" and "D" on the right; the shooting lines are "AB" and "CD"). Scores will be recorded and submitted to organizers at the end of the round to set up brackets for elimination rounds.

There will be a break of 30-45 minutes after the qualifying rounds to set up the elimination rounds brackets and reconfigure targets as needed.

Elimination rounds: archers in the same division and distance will be organized into brackets; archers shoot in one-on-one elimination rounds, with the winners of each round facing off in the next round, though to quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final round. Depending on the number of archers in a bracket, some may receive a "bye" for the initial round to advance automatically to the next round.

Elimination rounds matches are shot in the following format:

  • Compound: archers shoot 5 ends of 3 arrows; the highest cumulative score wins the match.
  • Others: archers shoot up to 5 ends of 3 arrows; after each end, the archer with the higher score for that end receives 2 points (in a tie, each archer receives 1 point). The first archer to 6+ points wins the match.

A tie score is broken by a 1-arrow shoot-off: each archer shoots one arrow at their target; the archer with the arrow closest to the center wins the match.
